Our survival as a planet depends on drastically curbing\ngreenhouse gas emissions in the very near future. Our survival also depends on\ncompletely eliminating the danger of nuclear weapons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
By fortunate coincidence, the resources (federal funding,\nprivate funding, scientific and technical expertise, jobs and infrastructure)\ncurrently being wasted on nuclear weapons can be shifted to the production of\ngreen technologies to address the climate crisis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Unless we take swift and decisive action to reduce global\ncarbon emissions, the consequences of climate change will be catastrophic. This\nis a life-threatening emergency that can only be adequately addressed in the\ntimeframe we have available to us through a profound change in our priorities,\nas in a \u201cGreen New Deal.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The existence of nuclear weapons is also a life-threatening\nemergency that threatens all life on this planet, and needs to be addressed with\nequal urgency. The world has now outlawed these weapons through the 2017 Treaty\non the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (or \u201cNuclear Ban Treaty\u201d). It is up to the\nUS to lead the way to their total elimination. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Paying for a Green New Deal is going to require money,\nskills, jobs, technological innovation and infrastructure on an unprecedented\nscale. It will also require working much more cooperatively with other countries.\nEliminating nuclear weapons will release a huge amount of money, skills, jobs, technological\ninnovation and infrastructure needed for a Green New Deal. And it will also help\nto transform our relationship with the rest of the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And underpinning both of these global emergencies is a third\nemergency of equal importance: an emergency of spiraling inequality and\ninjustice that makes both nuclear war and uncontrolled climate change both more\nlikely and more dangerous. Unless we simultaneously address the grotesque levels\nof inequality, both within and between countries, we will not be able to solve\nthe other two global emergencies we face. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is why the Green New Deal that has been proposed by\nMassachusetts Senator Markey and New York Representative Ocasio-Cortez is about\ncreating jobs, supporting the poorest and most marginalized communities, and addressing\nthe inequalities and injustices around us as we address climate change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are many, many other issues that are also of huge\nimportance right now \u2013 and they can be solved, as long as humanity itself\nsurvives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since the climate and nuclear crises are such profoundly egregious\nexamples of injustice and political corruption, it\u2019s possible that solving them\ncan offer renewed hope, strategies, and energy for solving the epidemic of gun\nviolence; the systemic racism that is not just denying people opportunities but\nliterally killing them; the cycle of terrorism and wars that just breed more terrorism;\nthe injustices suffered because of sexual orientation and gender\nidentification; and the broken systems of health care, immigration, and mass\nincarceration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our survival is not guaranteed. This is the choice before us\nas we approach the 2020 national election cycle: will the people of this\ncountry rise up and demand that we address these three life-threatening emergencies\nas our absolute top priority? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nothing we have ever faced in all of human history is as important as what we do now in the face of these global life-threatening emergencies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
